I'm getting kind of tired with my drawings at the moment. I seem to be struggling more and more with the creative side of the work. Technically I think I'm as as strong as ever, but the ideas I have for work are starting to feel really flat and shallow. My ideas seem tired and cliched, without the spark to make them stand out.
I look around DA and the work I love is technically beautiful, but also always really interesting. Sometimes it's a great concept, sometimes someone has just created something really simple that is so well crafted and styled that it becomes a great image. If I draw a figure I always seem to be finding ways to make them exciting and interesting but I never manage to turn somethign simple and ordinary into a great image.
It was a recent image by Charlie140588 ( fav.me/d2qgzl6 )that made me question this a bit more. Her picture was a fairly ordinary figure - a girl wearing a hat and holding a flag - but it was turned into a great looking image through the handling of all sorts of elements, including the pose, use of colour, visual style, etc.
My girlfriend says I'm not doing enough to inspire me, and I guess that is part of it. Ideas have to come from somewhere, and between work and relaxation time I'm not doing much to flex the old creative muscles.
So what do I do? I don't want to keep drawing chicks with weapons unless I can make it interesting. I can definitely push my skills with observational work, although I still need to do more of this, but I'm an illustrative artist, I believe my best work should come from my ideas, not from a secondary source.
How do I find new inspiration?
It's a boggle

I take it back...
You know what, I don't want to say good bye and sign off. Not even for a bit. DA kept me working for four years, gave me inspiration and a reason to create work - to share.
Dammit, I need to be more proactive. I'm going to put up some unsubmitted work and get back to it! Yeah!
(we'll see how this goes. If I go silent, you'll know I gave up again)
Inactive
I forget that even if I'm not giving it much attention, others may still be looking at my pages here, so I think it's wise I update my journal.
Basically my account here is pretty much inactive now. I haven't made much work over the last couple of years really; I struggle for ideas, get bored way too easily and what artwork I do come up with tends to be traditional paitings and drawings done while I'm at work that never make it to a digital format.
Please still feel free to browse and comment. I may be back one day.
Bye for now.
Devious Journal Entry
So no Journal for a while.
Still very happily engaged, with plans gradually rolling forward to our wedding, even if that is still rather distant. We're also well on the way to owning our first house, all agreed and we're now waiting on the legal cogs to slowly turn.
Been making a lot more work lately, overall output is still pretty low, but at least I'm steadily producing work again, rather than sitting worrying about it. As well as my digital work on here I'm trying to keep drawing more as my pencil skills were getting a little rusty, and I'm also starting to do more paper-cuts, hopefully somethign I can start selling in the near future.
An engagement
Nice to be able to put up a fresh journal for such a huge, and positive occasion.
Got engaged to my girlfriend this weekend :)
Have had a lovely weekend, took her away to an incredible, medieval styled hotel in the Midlands (UK) where I proposed, and we had a beautiful and wonderful stay, then thoroughly enjoyed spending Sunday touring round to visit friends and relatives to share the news. Is awesome making so many people happy.
on other notes, OMG IT'S COLD!!!
UK seems to be in a deep freeze. Snow and ice finally started to clear up after 2 weeks, only for a freezing fog to drop that seems hell bent on keeping me locked out of my car.

I'm a boggle.
Anyway, what I do is write loads of words on different bits of paper put them in a hat and pick 3 or 4 out at a time and draw whatever bizarre nonsense I get. Usually something like 'purple climbing lobster banana' or whatever.
I should draw that.....
